ABOUT ACHIEVING ZERO WASTE AT SFMTA

San Francisco’s Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance requires that all city agencies achieve “zero waste” by 2020, meaning 100% of recyclable and compostable materials are diverted from landfill. For SFMTA, which must contend with mounds of bus sweepings, waste from the gilley rooms and offices, and maintenance yard debris, this is no easy task. In 2017, Citizen Film documented the first steps of the journey toward achieving zero waste, led by Green Streets’ Tyrone Mullins and SFMTA Zero Waste Coordinator Violet Henderson.
